Proceed To Article Report Of The Surgeon General's Conference On Children's Mental Health: A National Action Agenda
On 01 January 2001, Vidyya brought you news that the Surgeon General was about to release a report regarding children's mental health. This report introduces a blueprint for addressing children's mental health in the United States. It reflects the culmination of a number of significant activities over the past year. On March 20, 2000, a White House Meeting launched a new public-private effort to improve the appropriate diagnosis and treatment of children with emotional and behavioral conditions. Serious concerns were raised about the appropriate diagnosis and treatment of emotional and behavioral difficulties in children, and the need to take steps to address this issue. Input on critical issues in children's mental health was solicited from the public through the World Wide Web and by mailing requests to over 500 individuals. Approximately 50 individuals were invited to provide input at a day of thoughtful discussion about the gaps in the knowledge on children's mental health. Get the full report in today's issue. Get a synopsis of the research and a fact sheet on the diet in today's issue. More...

Besides suffering severe tiredness and a host of other symptoms, some patients with chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) find standing for long periods makes them lightheaded or even faint; eventually their blood pressure drops so low they can't remain upright, a condition known as neurally mediated hypotension (NMH). But according to a new study in the Journal of the American Medical Association, a steroid hormone drug, fludrocortisone, often used to treat low blood pressure, by itself does not alleviate these symptoms in CFS patients any better than a placebo. Proceed To Article Outbreak Of Poliomyelitis In Dominican Republic And Haiti: Low Vaccination Coverage With Oral Polio Vaccine Allows Sabin-Derived Vaccine To Circulate
A current outbreak of poliomyelitis in Dominican Republic and Haiti has raised serious concerns because the Western Hemisphere has been free of wild poliovirus circulation since 1991, and because the virus identified is an unusual derivative of the Sabin type 1 oral poliovirus vaccine (OPV), according to Dr. Ciro de Quadros, who directs the Pan American Health Organization's Division of Vaccines and Immunization. The Ministries of Health of the Dominican Republic and Haiti, with the assistance of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), are investigating the outbreak to determine the extent of spread and evaluate the reasons for the outbreak. Aggressive control measures have already been put in place. More...
