March is colorectal cancer screening month. For the last three days, Vidyya has run a number of stories for patients and professionals regarding the importance of the screening tests. This final handout for patients illustrates the risk of developing colorectal cancer (cancer of the colon or rectum). This risk increases with age. Most cases (93%) occur in people 50 and older. But screening tests can help prevent colorectal cancer (CRC), by finding pre-cancerous polyps (growths in the colon) so they can be removed before they turn into cancer. Screening can also find CRC early, when treatment is most effective.
