Tomorrow is World Health Day 2001. World Health Day is a global advocacy and awareness-raising activity dedicated to mental health issues. The prime objective is to impact public opinion and stimulate debate on how to improve the current condition of mental health around the world. International attention is thankfully increasing for mental health issues, however, much still needs to be done. No country and no person is immune to mental disorders and their impact in psychological, social and economic terms is very high. Some 400 million people in the world suffer from mental or neurological disorders or from psychosocial problems such as those related to alcohol and drug abuse. Of every four people who turn to the health services for help, at least one is troubled by these disorders which are often not correctly diagnosed and thus not treated. Each year in the United States, an estimated 76 million persons contract foodborne illnesses. CDC's Emerging Infections Program Foodborne Diseases Active Surveillance Network (FoodNet) collects data about nine foodborne diseases in eight U.S. sites to quantify and monitor foodborne illnesses. This report describes preliminary surveillance data for 2000 and compares them with 1996--1999 data. More...

Proceed To Article STI571 (Glivec ®) Proves Itself in Chronic Myeloid Leukemia
The positive results of new studies have put STI571 on track for marketing approval, which is expected soon from the US Food and Drug Administration, according to the New England Journal Of Medicine. STI571 is one the first molecularly targeted drugs to emerge from the ongoing genetic revolution, which has enabled scientists to design drugs based on the changes that cancer causes in cells. In CML, the STI571 is targeted at a specific genetic abnormality found in cells of patients with this disease.

Less Risk Of Nocturnal Hypoglycemia Associated With Lantus® (Insulin Glargine [rDNA Origin] Injection) Compared With NPH
In a pivotal trial comparing the safety and efficacy of the long-acting analog insulin Lantus(R) (insulin glargine [rDNA origin] injection) with NPH (neutral protamine Hagedorn) in patients with type 2 diabetes, previously treated with insulin alone, Lantus demonstrated a 25 percent lower risk of nocturnal hypoglycemia.
