Newsletter Summary For 09-August-2000:

A man dies in the Netherlands of a disease that's rarely seen in northern Europe while three patients are diagnosed in California with the same type of virus, which is very rare in North America (not to mention virtually unheard of in California). The rodent-borne arenavirus family has been busy this week. You can read more about it in today's Vidyya. We've provided both a fact sheet on Lassa fever, one of the better known arenavirus illnesses, and a summary of the new and odd, arenavirus outbreaks.

On the subject of infectious diseases, this week's release of the Emerging Infectious Diseases journal contains an excellent article on the art of disclosing the threat of emerging infections to the general public. You can read the article, in it's entirety, in this issue.

In other news, the National Institute of Mental Health has just released a new fact sheet for physicians on the subject of depression. You can get the fact sheet in this issue.

Finally, we like to keep you up-to-date on what the FDA has been doing. This week the FDA approved a new use for Fragmin®. Fragmin is a low-molecular-weight-heparin that has just been approved for once-daily dosing for patients following hip replacement surgery. Since more than 280,000 people undergo hip replacement each year, with potentially fatal blood clots occurring in up to 60 percent of these cases, it's good to have choices available to avoid post-operative complications.

As always, we hope you enjoy the issue.
