Vidyya Medical News Service For 29-September-2000:

The Food and Drug Administration today approved mifepristone (trade name Mifeprex) for the termination of early pregnancy, defined as 49 days or less, counting from the beginning of the last menstrual period. This decision is expected to touch off a storm of controversy.

Get the complete prescribing information for mifepristone in today's Vidyya. The use of the drug is complex and heavily restriced. It will not be available in pharmacies and it will be illegal to sell mifeprisonte over the Internet. Patients must sign an agreement and read a medication guide before being allowed to proceed with treatment.

The medication guide is to be carefully examined before a patient takes mifepristone (Mifeprex ®) and misoprostol. The information is designed to help the patient understand how the treatment works. The guide does not take the place of a health care provider. It is important for all involved to understand that the most important aspect of the medication is that it is used to terminate early pregnancy. The full guide appears in today's Vidyya.

If you are a health care provider, prior to establishing your ability to prescribe and administer mifeprisone, you must sign and return this letter to the distributor, indicating that you have met the qualifications and will observe the guidelines in this publication. If you oversee more than one office facility, you will need to list each facility on your order form prior to shipping the first order.
