Vidyya Medical News Service For 04-November-2000:

The following stories appear in full on today's Vidyya Medical News Service Web site.

Yesterday, Vidyya provided news of the Great American Smoke Out and a copy of the Surgeon General's recommendations to help patients quit smoking. Today's issue is rich with lung cancer facts, new treatment findings and more.

Adding chemotherapy to radiation therapy does not prolong survival in operable, non-small-cell lung cancer, according to a large, randomized study that compared the chemotherapy/radiation combination to radiation alone. The new findings appear in the 26 October New England Journal of Medicine.

The National Cancer Institute (NCI) has recruited 3,000 current and former smokers for the Lung Screening Study, a year-long, $3 million study of spiral computed tomography (CT) scans, promising but unproven technology for lung cancer screening. While the study will not determine if the scans save lives--the gold standard for any cancer screening test--it will gauge the feasibility of a larger, longer study designed for that goal.

Do you need to brush up on your knowledge of lung pathology? Try Pathology Atlases On CD ROM available from Vidyya's sponser Vidyya.. These electronic pathology atlases offer clinicians access to thousands of high-quality color images from the collections of world-renowned pathologists. Each organ system is presented on its own individual compact disk; each is easily accessed at the touch of a button.

The following citations were newly added to the CANCERLIT database on the subject of Small Cell Lung Cancer for the month of October 2000. They abstracts were located using a predetermined search strategy. Get up to date with your reading in one place with this short list of what's new.

As always, we hope you enjoy the issue.
