A malaria epidemic that has already affected an estimated 276,000 people in the northern highland districts of Burundi could affect hundreds of thousands more with the imminent rainy season, the Roll Back Malaria (RBM) secretariat at the World Health Organization (WHO) warns today. The latest report from the Age-Related Eye Disease Study (AREDS) in the December issue of Ophthalmology, the journal of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, emphasizes the association of smoking and hypertension with development of macular degeneration. Federal Inquiry In The Works For Paxil Maker
Britain's SmithKline Beecham PLC, the maker of the popular anti-depressant Paxil, is facing a federal investigation into whether it violated antitrust laws by preventing or impeding the marketing of generic equivalents. The investigation was revealed this week in court documents filed in federal court in Chicago by Apotex Corp., which is trying to market a generic version of Paxil. More...
