Glaucoma is a major public health problem in the US. The disease is manifest as aprogressive optic neuropathy that, if left untreated, leads to blindness. It is estimated that as many as 3 million Americans have the disease and, of these, as many as 120,000 are blind as a result. Furthermore, it is the number one cause of blindness in African-Americans. Treatments to slow the progression of the disease are available; however, at least half of those who have glaucoma are not receiving treatment because they are unaware of their condition. More...

A patient experiencing an alteration in vision may not be able to communicate to his practitioner exactly what is wrong with his vision. Further, health practitioners may not be familiar with exactly which eye condition a patient suffers from by a given description. For that reason, the National Eye Institute of the National Institutes of Health presents this set of eye disease simulations.
