Newsletter Summary For 12-August-2000:

Acupuncture will be the talk of the town next week when a study, to be published in the Archives of Internal Medicine and discussed in next week's JAMA becomes public. Yale University researchers found that cocaine dependent patients who received a course of auricular acupuncture (acupuncture needles inserted into four specific points in the outer ear) were more likely to be free of cocaine during treatment than those not receiving acupuncture.

The CDC has issued a statement on the use of Nonoxynol-9 as a deterrent to the spread of the HIV virus. The statement comes on the heels of research announced at the International AIDS Conference held in Durban, South Africa last month that found those women using the spermicide had higher rates of HIV infection than did their counterparts on placebo.

Diabetics will be happy to know that an easy-to-use method of blood glucose testing will be made available this week. The new and FDA approved arm testing strips allow patients to take small drops of blood from anywhere on their arm negating the need to use a sensitive fingertip.

We've concluded this issue with news of an asthma drug that can be used in a nebulizer for the very young and a quick summary list of important drug labeling changes that took place in June 2000.
