The FDA approved two unique items yesterday. The first is a surgically implanted hearing aid intended to help adults with moderate to severe nerve hearing loss. The second is a bovine, biomechanically-engineered mitral valve replacement that is the first of its kind. You can read about both in today's Vidyya

In other news, a newly finished report shows that cocaine abuse indicators increased in many U.S. metropolitan areas during 1998 and the first half of 1999, according to a NIDA-supported network of drug abuse researchers who report data on drug abuse in the US. The rise follows several years of stable or declining use, the researchers reported at the meeting of the Community Epidemiology Work Group (CEWG). We have the full report for you.

Finally, just in time for the back-to-school season, Contemporary Pediatrics has published new guidelines for the treatment of resistant head lice in a supplement to its August issue. The guidelines emerged from a working group conference held at the Harvard School of Public Health. We have a summary of the guidelines for you.
