Announcement From The World Health Organization

The World Health Organization (WHO) has announced that up to 17 countries in West and Central Africa launched a synchronized polio immunization campaign on October 14 in an attempt to reach 70 million children all at once.

The largest public health initiative ever undertaken in the region will last till October 23. Thousands of health workers and trained volunteers will take part in the campaign, going door-to- door to make sure no child is missed.

The countries taking part are Benin, Burkina Faso, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea Bissau, Guinea, Liberia, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal, Sierra Leone, and Togo. Three more countries, Cameroon, Chad, and Cote d'Ivoire, will join the massive cross- border polio immunization campaign in mid-November.

The partners in the Global Polio Eradication Effort are the WHO, the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Rotary International, and the United Nations Children's Fund ( UNICEF), in addition to participating national governments and private foundations.
