Is There A Link Between Day Care And Aggressive Behavior?
A long-term study that has yet to go through the peer-review process or any other type of rigorous scientific evaluation has leaked early information to USA Today and to the New York Times that says children who spend most of their time in child care are three times as likely to exhibit behavioral problems in kindergarten as those who are cared for by their mothers. The story was also a topic of conversation on the Paul Harvey and Rush Limbaugh radio programs and will be a topic of conversation for pediatricians and patients for some time to come. more

Fatal And Severe Hepatitis Associated With Rifampin And Pyrazinamide For The Treatment Of Latent Tuberculosis Infection
One of the recommended treatments for latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) is a 9-month regimen of isoniazid (INH); a 2-month regimen of rifampin (RIF) and pyrazinamide (PZA) is an alternative in some instances. In September 2000, a man in New York died of hepatitis after 5 weeks of RIF-PZA, and in December, a woman in Georgia was admitted to a hospital because of hepatitis after 7 weeks of this regimen. A report in today's issue summarizes the findings of the investigations of these incidents, which underscore the need for clinical monitoring for adverse effects in all patients receiving treatment for LTBI. more

Health Problems Associated With Petting Zoos: Outbreaks Of Escherichia coli O157:H7 Infections Among Children Associated With Farm Visits
During the spring and fall of 2000, outbreaks of Escherichia coli O157:H7 infections among school children in Pennsylvania and Washington resulted in 56 illnesses and 19 hospitalizations. Illness was associated with school and family visits to farms where children came into direct contact with farm animals. This report summarizes the findings of investigations of these outbreaks and includes strategies to reduce the transmission of enteric pathogens from farm animals to children. more

Medication For Low Blood Pressure May Help Dialysis Patients Avoid Serious Complications
Studies presented today by a Yale researcher at the annual National Kidney Foundation Meeting in Orlando, Florida, show that midodrine hydrochloride, a medication normally used to treat low blood pressure, may also help kidney disease patients avoid some of the serious side effects of dialysis. more

Study Explores Estrogen Alternative - Evista
An estrogen alternative does not appear to have one of the possible benefits of the real hormone -- protection against mental decline. Some research has suggested that taking estrogen reduces the risk of getting Alzheimer's disease for post-menopausal women. In a study reported in Thursday's New England Journal of Medicine, researchers looked at the effect of an estrogen alternative, Evista, on mental ability. more
