Acute Respiratory Illness Among US Travelers To Mexico
Mexico Ministry of Health and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) are investigating an outbreak of acute respiratory illness among US travelers returning from Acapulco, Mexico, during March. The source of the exposure has not yet been determined. However, preliminary information has revealed that all ill persons either stayed in or spent time on the premises of the Calinda Beach Hotel in Acapulco. more

Bone Marrow Transplant May Reverse Artery Damage In The Brain
Cranial artery damage in patients with sickle cell disease may be reversed through bone marrow transplant, according to a recent study in the February 2001 issue of the Annals of Neurology. St. Jude Children's Research Hospital scientist Grant Steen, Ph.D. is the author of the study. more

Vardenafil Improves Erectile Function Regardless Of Age Or Severity Of Erectile Difficulty
Results from the first large-scale patient trial of vardenafil, Bayer's investigational phosphodiesterase-5 (PDE-5) inhibitor, showed that vardenafil not only improved erections in up to 80 percent of men, but also increased their ability to complete sexual intercourse with ejaculation. The results of three separate sub-analyses were presented Saturday at the XVI annual European Association of Urology (EAU) meeting in Geneva, Switzerland.  more

Serious illness is a major reason why poor populations remain trapped in poverty. Either they cannot afford health care or else its cost is so high that they are pushed into debt and dependency. The knock-on effects are many and long lasting. Parents cannot afford to send their children to school, working days are lost and economic productivity declines. In countries hit hardest by diseases such as malaria and HIV/AIDS, development has ceased altogether. Yet cost-effective tools for fighting ill health do exist. Essential drugs are one of those tools.
