Childhood Cancer Survivors At Risk For Osteoporosis
Survivors of childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) are at a greater risk for developing osteoporosis, or reduced bone density, according research from St. Jude Children's Research Hospital(R). The findings will be published in the 01 May 2001 issue of "Leukemia." The team, lead by Sue Kaste, D.O., found that 68 percent of the study group had a bone mineral density (BMD) below the median age and general population controls, and 14 percent of those patients fit the standardized criteria for osteoporosis. The median age of the study participants was in the early to mid-20s. more

Class-Action Lawsuit Against Makers Of Ritalin Dismissed
On Friday, Novartis Pharmaceuticals Corporation, the manufacturer of Ritalin ® (methylphenidate), learned that US District Judge Rudi M. Brewster reaffirmed his earlier ruling to dismiss the class action lawsuit claiming the company conspired with the American Psychiatric Association (APA) and Children and Adults with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (CHADD) to promote the diagnosis of Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). The case was dismissed under California's anti-SLAPP statute that provides for dismissal of lawsuits that attack defendants for their speech about an issue of public interest. more

Update: Women With Silicone Breast Implants Have No Increased Risk Of Death From Most Causes
Earlier this week, Vidyya reported on a study that found breast implant patients to be at higher risk of mortality from a variety of causes. The study in question has been further evaluated and women with implants have been found to have lower mortality rates from most causes with the exception of brain cancer, suicide, pneumonia and emphysema.  more

Fatal Occupational Injuries - United States, 1980-1997
An MMWR report found in today's issue of Vidyya provides an overview of traumatic occupational deaths among civilian workers from NTOF from 1980 through 1997, the most recent year for which data are available. The data presented in this report indicate a decrease in occupational deaths over this period with mining, agriculture/forestry/fishing, and construction having the highest death rates; motor-vehicle crashes were the leading cause of injury-related deaths for U.S. workers. State health departments and others involved in prevention of occupational injuries can use the data to prioritize intervention programs.  more
