Race Is A Factor In Stroke Treatment
Whites are five times more likely than blacks to receive emergency clot-busting treatment for stroke, researchers found. Only 1.1 percent of blacks received the drug TPA in a study of the nation's top hospitals, compared with 5.3 percent of whites. Researchers said a large racial disparity persisted even after they took into account age, gender, type of insurance and severity of the stroke. more

Aggressive Treatment Warranted For Some Infants With Jaundice
In a small fraction of newborns with jaundice, aggressive medical treatment may be necessary to avoid long-term neurological injury, say researchers from The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. Reporting in the May issue of the journal Pediatrics, the researchers also suggest that early hospital discharge and inadequate counseling about breastfeeding played a role in the jaundice, also called hyperbilirubinemia, found in the infants they studied. more

Sufferers of one of the most severe types of chronic fatigue syndrome gathered in Edinburgh on Monday to lobby for greater recognition of the illness. They say doctors have not taken the condition seriously enough and have called on the Scottish parliament to establish a special clinic to be established by the UK National Health Service to treat the disease. more
