Blood Clots Strike One In Ten Air Passengers
One in 10 people who travel on long-haul flights develop blood clots, according to researchers in London. A study appearing in this week's issue of The Lancet reveals that 40 times more people suffered deep vein thrombosis (DVT) after long-haul flights than previously thought. more

CDC Report Highlights Selected Racial And Ethnic Pregnancy-Related Death Rates
A new Federal study on pregnancy-related deaths among specific racial and ethnic groups in the United States found that Hispanic, Asian/Pacific Islander, and American Indian/Alaska Native women had a significantly higher risk of death related to pregnancy than non-Hispanic white women. more

Evidence Based Report: Screening For Bacterial Vaginosis In Pregnancy
Bacterial vaginosis, a common condition in pregnant women, has been linked to pre-term delivery, an important problem for babies and parents. Nevertheless, the US Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) concludes that existing scientific studies don’t provide clear evidence that screening for and treating BV will have important health benefits for babies. More research is needed to determine which women might be most likely to benefit from BV treatment and which screening tests and treatments might be most effective. Although the third USPSTF does not recommend for or against regular BV screening for pregnant women at high risk for pre-term delivery, there may be cases in which screening pregnant women for BV may be beneficial. Weekly Taxol (Paclitaxel) Benefits Both Old And Young Breast Cancer Patients
Weekly Taxol (paclitaxel) is as effective and well tolerated in patients with advanced breast cancer over age 65 as it is in younger patients. That is the conclusion of a study presented today by Dr. Edith Perez during the 37th annual meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO). This multi-center, Phase II study, conducted by Perez, is the largest clinical trial to date to study the safety and efficacy of weekly Taxol. more
