New Combination Vaccine Approved For Protection Against Two Hepatitis Viruses
On 11 May 2001, FDA approved a new combination vaccine that protects individuals 18 years of age or older against diseases caused by the hepatitis A virus (HAV) and the hepatitis B virus (HBV). The vaccine, called Twinrix, combines two already approved vaccines, Havrix (Hepatitis A Vaccine, Inactivated) and Engerix-B [Hepatitis B Vaccine (Recombinant)] so that people at high risk for exposure to both viruses can be immunized against both at the same time. more

Twinrix Adult is indicated for use in non-immune adults and adolescents 16 years of age and above who are at risk of both hepatitis A and hepatitis B infection. Study Shows Lowering Blood Pressure In Patients With Hypertension-Caused Memory Decline Demonstrates Significant Improvement In Cognitive Skills
A team of physicians and scientists led by Edwin J. Jacobson, MD, University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA) School of Medicine, announced the results of a clinical study on the effect of blood pressure control on cognitive function. The study, the only one ever designed to examine this aspect of cognitive function, sought to determine whether patients with memory impairment caused by hypertension could improve cognitive function by lowering blood pressure levels. more

Strain Of Polio From Northern India Discovered In Infant In Bulgaria
A case of polio--the first in Europe since 1998--has been found in an unvaccinated baby in Bulgaria, the World Health Organization said Thursday, adding the virus was traced back to northern India. Bulgarian authorities have reported a second case in the same region. more
