World No Tobacco Day is 31 May 2001. In keeping with worldwide efforts to reduce the use of tobacco Vidyya is reprinting two landmark reports from the World Health Organization. Throughout the week, we will also provide information on smoking cessation and other smoking, tobacco and health related issues.
A July 2000 report of an independent committee of experts outlined a number of ways in which the tobacco industry had attempted to undermine WHO tobacco control efforts in recent decades. This paper presents a brief chronology of the industry's relations with one such group, the International Life Sciences Institute (ILSI). Findings indicate that ILSI was used by certain tobacco companies to thwart tobacco control policies. more
