Oncology Agent Zometa Demonstrates Positive Impact on Prostate Cancer-Related Bone Complications
Men with prostate cancer who are treated with the newer oncology agent Zometa (zoledronic acid for injection) experience significantly fewer skeletal-related events (SREs) associated with bone metastases than those treated with a placebo, according to new data presented Saturday at the Society of Urologic Oncology meeting. This meeting is being held in conjunction with the 96th Annual Meeting of the American Urological Association. Participants taking Zometa also experienced a significant delay in the time to onset of the first SRE, as compared to those in the placebo group. In addition, Zometa offers the convenience of a 15-minute infusion time. more

Herbal Malaria Treatment, Sweet Wormwood, Shows Promise
In the past, malaria was one just one of many batttles fought by 120,000 displaced Burmese, living in camps on the north-west border of Thailand. The drugs which doctors would normally use to treat malaria were failing because the type of malaria prevalent in the camps was resistant to them. UK HIV Cases 'At All-Time High'
The number of newly diagnosed HIV cases in the UK has reached an all-time high, according to figures published on Friday. The Public Health Laboratory Service (PHLS) figures show there were 3,435 new cases in 2000. Which represents a 14% increase on the previous year's figures. The PHLS also said about 10,000 people in the UK were infected with HIV, but had not been diagnosed. more

Young gay and bisexual men in the United States, especially those who are black, are becoming infected with HIV at rates similar to those seen when the AIDS epidemic peaked in the mid-1980s, according to a new study. The report's staggering figures reveal that one-third of all black gay and bisexual male Americans under the age of 30 are HIV positive, and that infection rates have climbed sharply.  more
