Update: Influenza Activity - United States And Worldwide, 2000--01 Season, And Composition Of The 2001--02 Influenza Vaccine
The 2000--01 influenza season was mild in the United States and was the first season since 1995--96 that was not predominated by A (H3N2) viruses. Influenza A (H1N1) viruses predominated in the United States. In some regions, however, influenza B viruses were reported more frequently than influenza A viruses. Worldwide, influenza A (H1N1) and B viruses also predominated. This report summarizes US and worldwide influenza activity during the 2000--01 influenza season and describes the composition of the 2001--02 influenza vaccine. more

"Norwalk-Like Viruses" - Public Health Consequences And Outbreak Management
Norwalk-like viruses (NLVs) cause outbreaks of gastroenteritis and are spread frequently through contaminated food or water. Molecular diagnostics now enables detecting viruses in clinical and environmental specimens, linking of NLV strains causing outbreaks in multiple geographic locations, and tracing them to their sources in contaminated food or water. This report reviews recent advances in NLV detection and provides guidelines and recommendations for investigating NLV-related outbreaks, including specimen collection and disease prevention and control. This report also updates information provided in CDC's previously published, Viral Agents of Gastroenteritis: Public Health Importance and Outbreak Management (MMWR 1990;39 [No. RR-5]:1--24). These CDC recommendations are intended for public health professionals who investigate outbreaks of acute gastroenteritis but could be useful in academic and research settings as well. more

Surgeons Perform World's First Fully Laparoscopic Robotically Assisted Aortic Graft
"Henrico Doctors' Hospital is the first hospital in the world to perform a fully laparoscopic aortofemoral bypass assisted with the da Vinci(TM) Surgical System," according to William E. Kelley, Jr., M.D. The minimally invasive alternative to a highly invasive open procedure was performed by Dr. Barklie W. Zimmerman and Dr. Kelley, both members of The Richmond Surgical Group. Only four other da Vinci-assisted laparoscopic aortofemoral bypasses have been performed in the world, all in Europe. However, these cases were performed as partially open procedures, and therefore were not fully laparoscopic. more

Peripheral Arterial Tone (PAT) Signal Provides New Marker Of Sleep Quality
In several new studies presented at this week's Associated Professional Sleep Societies (APSS) meetings, researchers from Harvard, Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology and other major institutions from around the world have shown that sleep-related conditions such as obstructive sleep apnea, sleep fragmentation due to microarousals, and abnormal respiratory patterns associated with congestive heart failure are reflected by changes in an individual's peripheral arterial tone (PAT). These studies also indicate that the PAT signal can offer new insights into the relationship between sleep and cardiovascular health. more
