NIH Launches First Study To Examine Long-Term Effects Of Weight Loss And Exercise In Type 2 Diabetes
The first long-term study to look at the effects of weight loss in people with type 2 diabetes was launched at the annual meeting of the American Diabetes Association. Funded by the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), it is the largest study on the effects of weight-loss interventions ever funded by the NIH. more

Relapsing-Remitting MS Patients Treated With Interferon Beta Develop Less Disability
An article published in this week's issue of Neurology reports the results of PRISMS, a comprehensive four-year study of interferon beta-1a (Rebif), in the treatment of relapsing remitting multiple sclerosis (RRMS). The conclusions of the four-year study, involving 560 patients, give further support to the use of Rebif at high dose (44mcg) three times per week. Moreover, the study provides evidence that early treatment of MS results in significant benefits over later treatment. more

Novartis Pharmaceuticals Corporation announced that enrollment was complete for the Valsartan In Acute Myocardial Infarction Trial (VALIANT) with the angiotensin II receptor blocker (ARB) Diovan(R) (valsartan). With more than 14,500 patients at 950 sites in 24 countries, VALIANT is the largest survival study of an ARB in patients who have experienced myocardial infarction (MI), or heart attack and is just one of several large mortality and morbidity trials to investigate the benefits of Diovan beyond hypertension. Diovan is indicated for first-line treatment of high blood pressure and is the fastest growing top 10 branded prescription antihypertensive in the US today. more
