What Killed King Herod?
Historians remember him as a brutal, unpredictable, paranoid and cruel leader. During his 36-year
bloody reign as king of ancient Judea, Herod the Great ordered the executions of one wife and three sons, and, in a vain attempt
to destroy the infant Jesus, directed the infamous Slaughter of the Innocents. It's been more than 2,000 years since his death in 4
B.C., yet clinicians and scholars will unravel the mystery of what killed 69 year-old Herod the Great (or King Herod, as he is
called in the Bible's New Testament) during this year's historical Clinical Pathologic Conference (CPC) sponsored by the
Department of Veterans Affairs' (VA) Maryland Health Care System and the University of Maryland School of Medicine in
Baltimore. more

Children Who Begin To Wheeze At Ages 2 To 5 Likely To Continue Into Adulthood
The UK Medicines Control Agency (MCA) and Committee on Safety of Medicines (CSM) have
welcomed as responsible the decision by a number of organizations representing manufacturers, retailers and herbal practitioners
to ask their members to withdraw from sale temporarily any remedies containing the herbal ingredient Kava-kava. This
voluntary move is a precautionary measure in the light of serious liver side effects reported in Germany and Switzerland. No
such adverse effects have been seen in the UK. more

Simple Asthma Control Test Can Determine Future Health Care Needs
After querying 4,795 adults to determine when their asthma was under control, researchers developed
a brief, simple, self-administered five-item questionnaire that can predict both acute and routine health care utilization associated
with the disease over the next 12 months. The investigators indicated that asthma patients (those under age 65) with three to
four control problems consistently exhibited the highest rates of health care utilization. more

Molecular Details Of Water Transport In The Lung Identified
We may sputter and gasp when our drink goes down the wrong pipe, but fluid is vital to a healthy lung.
The crucial movement of water across cell membranes in the lung was long thought to be a passive process, but a team of
researchers from Hopkins and the University of Aarhus in Denmark have demonstrated that a specific protein plays a major
role. The discovery may lead to new treatments for some forms of asthma, pneumonia and pulmonary edema or
swelling. more
