Blood pressure drug shown to cut stroke, death risks in common form of hypertension
A drug that reduces high blood pressure in people with a form of the disease that's common later in life also cuts their risk of stroke and death, and does it better than another hypertension drug, a new study finds.  more

Prescribing information: Cozaar (losartan)
The usual starting dose of losartan is 50 mg once daily, with 25 mg recommended for patients with intravascular volume depletion (e.g., patients treated with diuretics) and patients with a history of hepatic impairment. Losartan can be administered once or twice daily at total daily doses of 25 to 100 mg. If the antihypertensive effect measured at trough using once-a-day dosing is inadequate, a twice-a-day regimen at the same total daily dose or an increase in dose may give a more satisfactory response. more

Prescribing information: Hyzaar (losartan potassium-hydrochlorothiazide tablets)
If patients on losartan monotherapy or HCTZ need further blood pressure reduction, switch to Hyzaar 50/12.5 once daily. If, for any reason, a patient cannot be switched to Hyzaar 50/12.5, refer to rule four. Hyzaar 50/12.5 is not indicated for initial therapy.  more
