New AHRQ data indicate that people with chronic conditions continue to smoke
A substantial number of smokers who report having a diagnosed chronic condition continue to smoke despite their health problems, according to new data from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality. Specifically, in 2000, about 37.9 percent of people with emphysema, 24.8 percent of people with asthma, 20 percent of people with hypertension or cardiovascular problems, and 18.5 percent of people with diabetes reported that they currently smoked.  more

'Lethal' cancer drug restricted in Japan: Drug in use in current US clinical trials
The Japanese Health Ministry has said it would impose stricter rules on the use of a lung cancer drug, which it said had been linked to the deaths of 124 patients. The ministry said the dead were among 494 patients who have developed severe side-effects after using the drug, Iressa, which went on sale in Japan in July. more

Early warning: You're about to have a heart attack
Scientists have used state-of-the-art micro-technology to develop an early warning system for heart attacks. This is done by using tiny bracket-like structures called nonacscale cantilevers. Researchers from the University of Basel in Switzerland coated the upper surface of the bracket's arm with antibodies which bind to the indicator proteins - creatinine kinase and myoglobin.  more

Anesthetic gases linked to multiple sclerosis
Exposure to anesthetic gases at work could triple the risk of developing multiple sclerosis, researchers claim. A small study of nurse anaesthetists in Sweden made the link. Researchers say it highlights the risks associated with the commonly used anesthetic gases.  more
