Congress completed work on the foreign aid bill without approving $3 billion for global AIDS
While in Uganda last week, National Security Advisor Condoleezza Rice stated that President Bush was urging lawmakers to allocate the full amount authorized ($3 billion) for the Global Fund for HIV/AIDS. And, at another meeting in Paris about the Global Fund, HHS Secretary Tommy Thompson assured participants he was fighting for the full $1 billion for the Fund. But, in fact, just as Congress was beginning to consider the measures, the White House sent a letter urging Congress limit the funding to $2 billion, with just $200 million for the Global Fund.  more

Taxotere(R) with cisplatin demonstrates more favorable overall response and survival rate compared to control regimen
Aventis announced the results of a pivotal trial, Tax 326, were published in the online version of the Journal of Clinical Oncology (JCO) this month. The three-arm study compared the effect on survival and quality of life of two Taxotere(R) (docetaxel) Injection Concentrate-platinum regimens vs. vinorelbine and cisplatin (VC) as first-line chemotherapy in advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC).  more

Taxotere, a drug in the taxoid class of chemotherapeutic agents, inhibits cancer cell division by essentially "freezing" the cell's internal skeleton, which is comprised of microtubules. Microtubules assemble and disassemble during a cell cycle. Taxotere promotes their assembly and blocks their disassembly, thereby preventing cancer cells from dividing and resulting in cancer cell death. more

HIV infection in adolescents
The AIDS epidemic among adolescents in the United States continues to be an increasing concern. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that 4,428 cumulative cases of AIDS among adolescents, ages 13 through 19, were reported through December 2001. The number of adolescents living with HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) infection is estimated to be much higher.  more
