There are several variations of emails being circulated that warn consumers not to buy Coca-Cola (or Pepsi) due to potential tainting of the products. These e-mails are a hoax. There are no advisories, recalls, or safety alerts concerning this product. Even minor risk of oxygen deprivation at or immediately after birth may place premature babies at greater risk for cognitive and language problems
Birth is a time of peril for the human brain, especially in pre-term infants. For vulnerable "preemies," biochemical signs of reduced blood oxygen levels (hypoxia) soon after birth are associated with lower IQs and language skills. In 2001, premature babies were 12 percent of U.S. births the highest level in 20 years, due in part to more multiple pregnancies, induced labor, and older mothers. more


Protein deficit impedes recovery after percutaneous angioplasty
If the body contains too little of the protein haptoglobin, the recovery of the blood vessels after percutaneous angioplasty is impeded. The Utrecht researcher Mirjam Smeets suspects that this is one of the reasons why 40 percent of patients who have undergone percutaneous angioplasty experience a new constriction.  more
