Sun avoidance will not reduce cancer
Avoiding the sun is not the best strategy for reducing overall rates of cancer, claims a senior doctor in a letter to this week's BMJ. Recommending moderate exposure to the sun would be more prudent.  more

Lung cancer cells fight eradication with a one-two punch: Finding may lead to new drugs
Lung cancer is one of the hardest to treat - but scientists may have found out how it shakes off the effects of powerful chemotherapy. Recent figures show that only one in 20 lung cancer patients survives beyond five years. This is because cells launch a two-stage "survival plan" when confronted with anti-cancer drugs, say experts from Imperial College London. The finding could help them come up better ways to eradicate lung cancer.  more

Nitric oxide, vessel health linked
Duke University Medical Center researchers have shown an association between changes in nitrate, a biochemical marker of nitric oxide production, and physiological changes in arteries' reaction to stress. They hope their discovery could eventually lead to a non-invasive method of determining which patients are at risk for developing cardiovascular disease.  more

Hepatitis A outbreak associated with green onions at a restaurant --- Monaca, Pennsylvania, 2003
The Pennsylvania Department of Health and CDC are investigating an outbreak of hepatitis A outbreak among patrons of a restaurant (Restaurant A) in Monaca, Pennsylvania. As of November 20, approximately 555 persons with hepatitis A have been identified, including at least 13 Restaurant A food service workers and 75 residents of six other states who dined at Restaurant A.
