British researchers have found traces of chemicals called parabens in tissue taken from women with breast cancer. Dr Philip Harvey, European editor of the Journal of Applied Toxicology, said the findings should be interpreted cautiously. A gene refered to as Alox15, which affects the density of mineralsin bones has been located. The scientists who have identified a gene believe it may play a key a role in determining who develops osteoporosis or brittle bone disease. more

Depression, head injuries linked
A small study published in a US journal revealed that head injury patients had a higher risk of depression problems than patients who had suffered other injuries. Patients who have suffered a head injury may be more likely to develop depression, say researchers. A third of those examined by doctors in Iowa City showed signs of depressive illness within a year. more

Pancreas transplant alone confers no survival advantage
People with brittle or complicated diabetes who receive either a pancreas transplant alone or a pancreas transplant after a kidney transplant have a lower survival rate than similar patients waiting for the same type of pancreas transplant. However, recipients of a simultaneous pancreas-kidney (SPK) transplant, who have diabetes as well as kidney failure, have better 1- and 4-year survival rates than those waitlisted for that surgery, according to a study published in The Journal of the American Medical Association on December 3, 2003.
