USDA BSE update for 16 January 2004

USDA's investigation on the 81 cows that came from Canada continues. Five additional animals have been located at a facility located in Connell, Washington. The State has placed a hold on the facility in order to facilitate the investigation. In total, 19 of the 81 cows that came from Canada have been located. more

Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE) - Q & A's
The U.S. Agriculture Secretary announced that USDA will begin immediate implementation of a verifiable system of national animal identification. The development of such a system has been underway for more than a year-and-a-half to achieve uniformity, consistency and efficiency across this national system.

The National Institute on Aging (NIA), part of the Federal Government’s National Institutes of Health (NIH), has primary responsibility for research aimed at finding ways to prevent, treat, and cure Alzheimer’s disease (AD). The Institute’s AD research program is integral to one of its main goals, which is to enhance the quality of life of older people by expanding knowledge about the aging brain and nervous system. Herceptin: Breast cancer drug a failure for lung cancer patients
Herceptin, a drug which has increased survival in many breast cancer patients has failed to live up to hopes that it might also help those with lung cancer. Researchers found patents given Herceptin alongside two other chemotherapy agents did no better than those given the two other drugs alone. But there was a hint that a small number of patients might benefit.

UK to open obesity 'specialty' hospital in March 2004
A £20m private hospital dedicated to performing surgery on the clinically obese is set to open later in March 2004. In what some are calling a radical approach, it is hoped that as many as 2,000 operations will be carried out in the first 12 months at Dolan Park Hospital at Tardebigge, near Bromsgrove, Worcestershire.
