"The heart truth" announces launch of its "Red Dress" road show
The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI), one of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), announced at an American Heart Month program in Washington D.C., its plans for a traveling exhibit on heart health. From March through April 2004, The Heart Truth Road Show, sponsored by NHLBI and presented by Johnson & Johnson, will bring important information to women across the United States to urge them to take their heart health seriously and personally. more

HRT trial stopped early after 'unacceptable risks' for women with previous breast cancer
A Swedish study established to assess the effect of hormone replacement therapy (HRT) for women with a history of breast cancer has been stopped early after preliminary results show 'unacceptably high' risks of breast cancer recurrence for HRT users. The results are published online by THE LANCET (3 February 2004) and will appear in the 7 February 2004 print edition.  more

Severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS)? Sometimes it's not severe
Like other viral illnesses, SARS coronavirus infection can present with only mild symptoms, according to a study published in the 15 February 15 issue of The Journal of Infectious Diseases, online now. The findings help to flesh out the clinical portrait of this novel illness, which emerged in 2003 as a syndrome in which fever and mylagia progressed rapidly to pneumonia and respiratory distress, prompting its initial designation of SARS, or severe acute respiratory syndrome. One implication of the current study is that early detection of future SARS-associated coronavirus outbreaks will require attention to the mild end of the disease's spectrum.  more

USDA BSE update for 2 February 2004
On Saturday, 31 January, three animals of interest were euthanized and sampled from the second Mabton, WA, facility. The facility has been released from quarantine. In addition to this facility, USDA has previously conducted selective depopulation activities at these facilities.  more

Stomach cancer rates declining fast in Europe
Stomach cancer rates fell by half in the European Union between 1980 and 1999 and by 45% in Eastern Europe and 40% in Russia, according to research published (Tuesday 3 February) in Annals of Oncology.  more

Avian influenza A(H5N1) update: Additional confirmed human case in Thailand; China announces suspected spread of infection in poultry; investigation of possible human-to-human transmission
Health authorities in Thailand have today announced a new laboratory-confirmed case of human infection with H5N1 avian influenza. The case, a 58-year-old woman, fell ill on 19 January and died on 27 January. more
