Substances found in blood may predict development of preeclampsia

Guidelines for the use of antiretroviral agents in pediatric HIV infection: Updated 20 January 2004 (PDF)
This report addresses the pediatric-specific issues associated with antiretroviral treatment and provides guidelines to health care providers caring for infected infants, children, and adolescents. It is recognized that guidelines for antiretroviral use in pediatric patients are rapidly evolving. The Working Group on Antiretroviral Therapy and Medical Management of HIV-Infected Children will review new data on an ongoing basis and provide regular updates to the guidelines; the most recent information is available on the AIDSinfo Web site (http://aidsinfo.nih.gov/). These guidelines are developed for the United States and may not be applicable in other countries.

FDA approves first drug for rare type of cancer
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) today approved Alimta (pemetrexed disodium)
for use in combination with cisplatin for the treatment of patients with malignant
pleural mesothelioma-a rare type of cancer. Alimta received a priority review
and is designated as an orphan drug. It is the first drug approved for this
condition.

Treatment options for mesothelioma differ depending upon the stage, size, and location of the tumor. Alimta, when given with cisplatin, is the first and only chemotherapy drug to be approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the treatment of patients with malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM) when surgery is not an option.. more

Nitroglycerin may promote blood vessel damage
Nitroglycerin -- a drug commonly prescribed for the treatment of chest pain in patients with heart conditions -- has the frustrating property that its beneficial effects are short-lived. Now, new research conducted by a German group and Howard Hughes Medical Institute investigators at Duke University Medical Center reveals the cellular mechanism underlying the drug's lost efficacy and raises additional concern about its potential to cause long-term injury.

Avian influenza A(H5N1)update: Situation in Viet Nam, Thailand, and FAO/OIE/WHO technical consultation on the control of avian influenza
The Ministry of Health in Viet Nam has informed WHO that two additional cases of H5N1 infection in humans have been confirmed. Both cases were fatal. more
