FDA updates hormone therapy information for post menopausal women
The Food and Drug Administration is requesting that manufacturers update labeling for hormone therapy products (estrogen and combination estrogen and progestin products) for use by postmenopausal women with data from WHIMS -- The Women's Health Initiative Memory Study. WHIMS reported an increased risk of dementia in women 65 and older and showed that estrogen with progestin (Prempro) failed to prevent mild cognitive impairment (memory loss). (WHIMS is a substudy of the Women's Health Initiative (WHI) conducted by the National Institutes of Health.) more

Estrogen and estrogen with progestin therapies for postmenopausal women
The Food and Drug Administration has received requests from the public to provide updated product information for estrogen- and progestin-containing drug products used for treating postmenopausal symptoms. Information from the Women’s Health Initiative (WHI) trial about estrogens and progestins continues to have significant public health implications for postmenopausal women. As the series of new study results from the WHI become available, we are encouraging manufacturers to update their labels for estrogen- and progestin-containing drug products for postmenopausal women to include new information from these studies. This information will allow individuals to understand the risks and benefits of these products and make appropriate health care decisions.

New study demonstrates key benefits of Risperdal/Consta in young adults with schizophrenia
Young adults, aged between 18 and 30, diagnosed with schizophrenia and considered symptomatically stable on their antipsychotic treatment, experience significant improvements in symptom control as well as reductions in side effects when switched to Risperdal® Consta® (risperidone long acting injection). The most common reasons for switching those patients to risperidone long-acting injection were non-compliance with previous medication, side effects or insufficient efficacy. These key findings are presented today at the Twelfth Biennial Winter Workshop on Schizophrenia in Davos, Switzerland.

Patients give nod to kidney dialysis at home
A first-of-its-kind patient satisfaction study suggests that many patients tethered to a life-saving artificial kidney machine that cleanses the blood stream of wastes might have preferred a second option -- home-based peritoneal dialysis that uses the lining of the patient's belly as a natural filter -- if only they had been given a truly informed choice. more
