FDA issues public health advisory on cautions for use of antidepressants in adults and children
The Food and Drug Administration today issued a Public Health Advisory that provides further cautions to physicians, their patients, and families and caregivers of patients about the need to closely monitor both adults and children with depression, especially at the beginning of treatment, or when the doses are changed with either an increase or decrease in the dose.  more

Antibiotics within 4 hours of arrival at hospital better for pneumonia patients
Giving older patients antibiotics within four hours of their arrival at a hospital for treatment of pneumonia reduces the length of hospital stay, and may reduce the chances of dying, according to an article in the 22 March issue of The Archives of Internal Medicine. more

Researchers identify a new form of disease gene associated with Rett syndrome
Scientists at The Hospital for Sick Children (Sick Kids), the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) and the University of Toronto (U of T) have identified an alternate form of the disease gene and protein for the neurodevelopmental condition Rett syndrome. This discovery is being incorporated into a new molecular test that will aid not only in the diagnosis of Rett syndrome, but also for other developmental disabilities.  more

Activity of calcium-handling gene appears to prevent cardiac arrhythmias
Activation of a gene already shown to correct heart failure by improving calcium metabolism in the heart muscle may also help prevent arrhythmias, sometimes-dangerous disturbances in heart rhythm, according to a study from the Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) Cardiovascular Research Center (CVRC). The article, being released today in the early online edition of Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, describes how overexpression of the protein SERCA2a in the hearts of rats reduced the incidence of arrhythmia after heart muscle injury. more

Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America says allergy sufferers need to study
According to the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America's (AAFA) first National Allergy Awareness Test released today, allergy sufferers scored average to failing grades in the areas of awareness, triggers, symptoms, prevention, and treatment. Results from the Test show that allergy sufferers think they are knowledgeable about allergies, however there is a gap between what sufferers know about allergies and the impact allergy symptoms have on their lives.  more
